Short film deals with the carbon cost of computing

Large technology companies like Microsoft, Google, Meta and Amazon contribute up to 2.8% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions through their data centres, manufacturing and consumer products.

Collectively emissions from the Information and Communication Technologies sector are larger than aviation.

Beyond the power used in data centres, factories and offices, Scinema film Bare Metal contends with the digital industry’s indirect emissions (called scope 3), embodied in raw materials such as concrete, steel and copper.

The short film outlines the digital infrastructure industry’s efforts to reduce its direct and indirect carbon footprint.

The film is timely as technology companies move to integrate energy hungry, emissions intensive machine learning technologies into their workplace tools and social media platforms.
